Always exciting to attend the NVTC Data Center & Cloud Committee meetings; this morning the speakers were Buddy Rizer and Dr. A. Fletcher Mangum.

Some of the highlights from the meeting:

- Data Center Market looks healthy for continued growth through 2020

- As other states catch up, they are giving lucrative incentives for data centers. We have to realize the competitive environment where Northern Virginia (NOVA) is no longer the "only" option

- NOVA surpassed NY/NJ region as largest data center market in the U.S.

- Five of the top cloud campuses are in NOVA -and particularly in Loudoun and Prince William Counties.

- Loudoun County offers great incentives from utility rates (Dominion Power), reclaim water, time to market, workforce, etc.

- Maintaining the Sales Tax Incentive is crucial as other states are directly competing in that front.

- Average wage growth for the data center sector is very healthy and surpasses other industry sectors.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In the mission critical world, we are quite accustomed to using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to analyze airflow and thermal boundaries. Health care is another field where CFD modeling is used (particularly isolation room airflow). The fact is that CFD is a versatile tool that can be used in a multitude of applications involving airflow analysis.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We recently completed a CFD study for a Garage Structure in which we analyzed the airflow through a new exterior metal screen mesh installed on an existing building façade. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">GOAL: We wanted to determine if the new metal mesh, with a 41% free area, will provide a level of natural ventilation airflow equal to or greater than a standard exterior garage wall constructed at the code minimum requirement of 20% free area. The CFD route was selected as it provided a robust solution to an otherwise complicated geometrical multi-dimensional problem.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The space and wind conditions created a challenge, but the folks at Coolsim worked closely with us to adapt the model to our needs. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The software is primarily implemented for the calculation of cooling airflow within enclosed structures, but the system includes, as its analytical engine, a program that allows for a detailed examination of airflow around various physical elements.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">By establishing an isolated free-body representation of a section of the parking garage, the effect of wind against a typical exterior structural bay were analyzed with various types of exterior construction elements. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In conclusion, the beauty of the Coolsim CFD model is that it provided proof-both visually and numerically that the airflow through the mesh exceeds minimum code requirements. As a result, (and hence the other benefit that I want to emphasize) is that that it saved the client the additional cost of installing mechanical ventilation fans throughout the garage structure.

Starting around the mid-2000's, owners started applying for LEED certifications pooled with other types of buildings under the "New Construction" category of LEED. The interest in applications increased dramatically after 2007 as energy conservation and sustainability awareness caught up to data centers.

An industry effort began in 2010 and successfully led in 2014 to establishing a "Data Center" sub-category under LEED v4.

So we're now in 2015 and I wanted to see how far reaching is the industry's enthusiasm in certifying their data centers for LEED Platinum, Gold, Silver or plain "Certified".

<a href='http:&#47;&#47;datacentersunclouded.blogspot.com&#47;'><img alt='Sheet 1 ' src='https:&#47;&#47;public.tableau.com&#47;static&#47;images&#47;LE&#47;LEEDDataCenters&#47;Sheet1&#47;1_rss.png' style='border: none' /></a>

I went to the source at the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and-not to my surprise- I was able to download a list of non-classified projects that are certified, as well in those in the review process queued up for the award notification (a systemic and lengthy process involving many disciplines and consultants). Using this available USGBC data as well as cross-checking many references from websites (...to be as inclusive as possible), I was able to globally map out the locations- as well as the Award Certification Level. This is an interactive map with metadata information available for each project that is represented by a dot.

Some observations that stand out: (1) The US overwhelmingly leads the LEED in the number of buildings certified. This is understandable as it is the country of origin for the LEED rating system where it is widely respected and implemented (and sometimes enforced!). Being a major hub for internet traffic and e-commerce also helps as rich corporations can afford the additional costs of LEED projects, but ultimately can also absorb the longer paybacks while justifying (and heavily marketing) their sustainability commitment to the public.
(2) It is encouraging to see China and Europe following suit to the US as data centers become a vital part of their economies.
(3) Latin America, Russia, Asia are at their infancy levels while there is a complete absence from Africa.

As I mentioned, this list is not inclusive of every project awaiting certification and I hope there are more from those regions. I appreciate comments by readers on projects that are on the "drawing board". However, it is also worth noting that many owners also design their facilities up to LEED standards without certifying them. As such, those projects are not considered certified no matter what language is used in marketing them.

In conclusion, LEED certified data centers are widely accepted, they are here to stay, and they are on the rise. Contact me if you have any questions on the LEED certification process for your data center.
Interesting to note that Russian readers came second after US readers. It seems that the data center industry is growing at a healthy pace in Russia. I have been to Moscow several times consulting on a data center project and I loved it! Maybe 2014 will renew the chance to do more consulting work in Russia.
When we think of Data Centers, we usually visualize large sexy facilities with row upon row of servers neatly arranged in aisles, often glowing under blue and green Hollywood style lighting!

That's not what I'm going to blog about today.....

I'm going to talk about the "Micro" data center. There's a niche market - small, but out there nevertheless, that focuses on a few racks, sometimes a few servers bundled in an enclosure that's either simply secured or elaborately weather tight. It makes sense for certain applications where the need for deploying IT servers is choked by the facility's ability to provide proper space, power or cooling. The idea is that the enclosure is environmentally isolated, fully cooled and powered, and tightly secured. It can be assembled in a factory, tested, shipped and dropped anywhere ready for plug and play.

They are branded as:

Micro Data Centers,

Data Centers in a Row,

Tactical Mobile Data Center

The market for Micro Data Centers was somewhat limited to isolated clients with needs for HPC rapid deployments. That is until 2012 when FAA and AOL announced plans to install Micro Data Centers provided by Elliptical Mobile Solutions on a large scale. (FAA in April 2013 and AOL in July 2012). The news was well publicized but we didn't see a stampede of other companies anxiously signing similar deals. I would say much of the current interest is driven by the military with demand for tactical mobile high performance computing needs. Servers in vault-like enclosure that can be transported to remote locations and can withstand harsh weather conditions.

But maybe I'm mistaken so your input is welcome.

I'll say a closing remark here before adding the list of vendors. As energy windows from ASHRAE are widened (think ambient cooling minus chillers, large UPS') and software applications for this type of install are worked out, I see a growing contender worthy of consideration.

Who's currently out there in the world of Micro Data Centers; below is a list of several selected vendors but is by no means inclusive of this niche industry.

1. Elliptical Mobile Solutions takes the lead in this arena. They offer indoor/outdoor solutions and have demonstrated demand for their product.

I

The paragraph above is extracted from NFPA-13, 2010.

21.14.2.3 (highlighted in yellow). To put things in context, this paragraph is tucked away on page 209 (Chapter 21) of the code. The code is approximately 400 pages long. It is "extracted" from NFPA 75 - 2010 Standard for the Fire Protection of Information Technology Equipment; perhaps as a convenience.

In the 2013 edition of NFPA 75, the paragraph is located in Chapter 22 as 22.14.2.3. A couple of clarifications were introduced as follows:

Other than the few exceptions introduced in 2013, the requirements are clear: You must provide a fire protection system below a raised floor and you have three options to pick from.

So whether you agree or disagree, these few paragraphs are embedded into NFPA 13 and hence the safest bet would be to assume that they are enforceable by the Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) unless proven otherwise! Designers, owners, and operators need to be aware of that.

Hopefully combustible material is not stored below raised floors, but beyond that, I have some questions that I cannot but ask:

I don't see a height requirement of a raised floor specified in the code. I can understand a 3 or 4 foot raised floor, but would a 12" still require it? Who makes that judgement?

Cable trays are often installed below raised floor, how is sprinkler coverage affected? What/where is the guideline to design a sprinkler layout with cable trays as obstructions?

Are local AHJs enforcing this?

How many manufacturers make sprinkler heads that are approved for such concealed spaces?

In a dynamic environment like a data center where you always have folks pulling cable or modifying what is already installed, is a more hazardous condition being created by introducing water piping below the floor?

Would signage be required on the floor indicating locations of sprinkler heads?

The one that caught my attention is regarding the distribution of data centers throughout the Middle East excluding Turkey.

Very impressive results from Saudi Arabia; they quietly lead other neighboring countries in the number of colo sites. This is surprising considering that most of the data center "MEA" mainstream headlines come out of the Emirates and Qatar but it shows that they lag behind Saudi Arabia.

Data Center Maps' first page has the following quote:

Data Center Map acts as a link between potential customers and suppliers of DC services worldwide, such as colocation, dedicated servers, cloud servers, managed hosting, IP transit and many other hosting services. Apart from that our comprehensive database also covers other relevant aspects of the industry, such as internet exchange points, presence of fiber providers, details about network carriers and other details that can be relevant when looking for colocation.

I don't how accurate and how frequent the stats are updated, but the map does show locations and quantities as one zooms in and out and the data is quite helpful for clients and users.

One can check the Search Interest on anything using Google Trends. (see the yellow comments box, which explains how they statistically graph the trend). But in simple terms, type up any keyword and the graph will accumulate all the online searches by other folks over the time frame. It even tells you the countries where the searches had the most hits.

One statistic I am interested to follow up on is Modular Data Centers.
The graph above shows how the interest in MDC's shot up in 2009 and peaked around 2011. Does this chart offer any crystal ball predictions? Certainly not. Take it for what it is: just another tidbit in data mining that's worth looking at. What's interesting is the renewed interest in MDC's since the beginning of 2013; not at the same levels as 2011, but getting there!

On January 29th, 2013, I looked at the performance of leading stocks in the cloud sector and I didn't like what I saw. Here's what I wrote then:

"The worse case would be that the street has figured that this space is getting saturated and needs a breather to catch up. That's called sector rotation, as those darling companies go out of favor. That's a version of the story that we're not particularly thrilled to hear as it takes many months to unfold and could put a drag on the entire sector."

This is the list of stocks that I follow (it excludes the newcomer QTS as I believe they went public in October; it will be added next year)

So where are data center stocks today? Let's look at a cumulative chart for year-to-date (YTD) performance of the entire portfolio. The group's return is 3% as of today's close.

Since the peak at the end of January, the group has consistently made lower highs (green bars), which translates to smart money (big institutions) selling into the rallies. The good news is that since August, the group seems to have found a floor as I don't see a recurrence of lower lows (red bars).

Now, how has this group's 3% performance compared to NASDAQ this year? Not too good considering the NASDAQ has appreciated almost 27% YTD. Ouch.

So while everyone was cheering the cloud this year, big money institutions seemed to be comfortably back on earth! Hopefully we'll see some winter sprouts of hope soon!
If you don't believe me, ask any plant manager who operates a 10 year old chiller if his maintenance plan includes the following: Recommissioning, Eddie Current test, Oil Test, tube cleaning, Vibration Test.

This past Wednesday, I attended the monthly ASHRAE National Capital Chapter meeting and the dinner topic was presented by Bob Baker, PE, Fellow ASHRAE and one of the thought leaders behind ASHRAE Standard 180 (Inspection and Maintenance of Commercial Building HVAC Systems).

The lecture focused on the importance of implementing a Maintenance Plan in a facility using guidelines such as ASHRAE Std. 180 and FEMP Operations and Maintenance Best Practices. Mr. Baker showed examples of successfully implemented plans and how they actually reduced the TCO of a system. This was not particularly aimed at data centers, but we can extend conclusions to any mission critical facility.

One of the key slides in the lecture (snap shot above) summarized the content of Standard 180. The reason I like this slide is because it captures a "common sense" idea that we often forget to include as part of a maintenance plan. Dialogue and Discussion with the owner/facility manager. It struck me how little we think about this bullet point. Simply talking to the owner and asking him/her what inventory do you have? What documentation do you have? Catalogs of existing equipment? Records? Commissioning reports etc...

Compared with the outcome of an unplanned outage - mainly customer satisfaction and cost, implementing a proper maintenance plan WILL definitely have a cost impact to capital budget, BUT it will result in a reduced TCO in a facility.

This was definitely one of the lectures that I really enjoyed and want to make it a point to catch up on the content of both 180 and FEMP.

The chart below, summarizes it all. Here's why:

This is a comparison of two alternatives for a proposed Tier III, 8 MW IT load project:

A Baseline efficient data center that meets ASHRAE energy minimum requirements

The same project but with LEED Platinum requirements

I'm not going to go through the detailed numbers because I don't want to loose focus on the main point of this post.

The Base Design in this analysis cost around $40 million. The Platinum Design cost around $56 million. The two points are plotted on the graph at year zero. Most decision makers will stop at this point and choose the Base design because there is less capital expenditures involved.

What they are missing though is the 20 years of operation and energy costs that are reflected in what we term the Total Cost of Ownership (or Life Cycle Costing). These cumulative costs over the days and months and years do add up to a hefty amount.

The graph above is an extraction of the first graph in which I simply captured 8 years into the operating timeframe. (It helps visualize the graphic). The plot shows that the Platinum building total operational costs remain higher than the Base alternative, but only for a short timeframe. Around the 5th year, the Platinum project starts to cost less to operate than its Base counter.

Now go back to the first graph above and follow the Magenta line. You will see that the Platinum LEED project over the 20 years lifetime, costs less to operate. To be exact, it costs roughly $140 million less to operate.

There's a lot of engineering economic analysis that happened behind the scenes to get these numbers. We had to look at energy costs, operation costs, maintenance costs, apply a realistic discount rate for borrowing monies, which may differ between one option and the other.

But the point I want to stress is that planning a project without doing TCO analysis is risky business; the operational costs over the years could drain your bank account. In this example the LEED Platinum project after the 6th year was the gift that kept on giving and identifying this gift required big picture TCO analysis.

We often get asked if there are drivers for site selection of a new data center that would push the particular project to the super-marketable-forefront of favorite data centers.

Well, there are several factors that are cooked into the formula, but here are 5 basic parameters which would give VIP status to any potential site:

1. Cost of Power. Think why Quincy, Ashburn, Prineville etc... attract big data center names. A fraction of difference in utility costs (cents!) make a difference when selecting a site.

2. Availability of Power. Can the utility absorb 20 MW to 30 MW easily?

3. Size of the incoming electrical feeds. What is the voltage that the utility can provide to the site?

4. Telecom Connectivity. How many telecom providers are available within the vicinity of the site.

5. Tax incentives. Are there any federal, state, or local municipal tax incentives to attract you to move to the site.

There you go.

In a nutshell, if you have these five essential parameters working in your favor, you will earn VIP status for your data center pretty quickly!

This is just an excerpt of the list of leading providers as of June 2013. I'm sure some names were missed, but for the most part, this is a good picture of who's out there.

The full study evaluated the strength and weaknesses of each as well as a subjective ranking system taking into account several parameters including efficiency, reliability, cost effectiveness, cooling capacity, addresses, etc...
Technology has become an integral part of how we live and work, but it's changing rapidly and the drivers of change are coming from new sources. The pressure is on to adopt a "cloud strategy" but many organizations haven't thought through their own requirements for: availability of information, security of intellectual property & personal data, and where data and information reside. NVTC will examine the current and future state of trends and emerging technologies that have a direct and significant impact on you and your organization. Noted author Andrew Blum will introduce the concept of "where the cloud lives" while discussing key insights from his best-selling book "Tubes: A Journey to the Center of the Internet." Industry leaders from Healthcare, the Federal Government, and Cybersecurity will share their insight into the critical issues, challenges & priorities that are driving mission critical IT, data centers, and cloud-all vital industries at the front of a global movement-and led by Northern Virginia and the Capital Region.

I've contemplated the idea of measuring a data center's sustainability as an index score in a similar manner to the LEED credit scoring system. I've concluded that for the index to be meaningful, it has to have the following characteristics:

It has to be all-encompassing of the digital environment of a data center starting with software, servers, and ending with infrastructure (UPS's, and chillers etc....): in other words, spanning IT and Infrastructure.

Data center projects are capital intensive with high recurring operation and maintenance costs. It is only worthy to look at sustainability from a point of view of reducing any of these costs within the project life cycle- hence reducing Total Cost of Ownership.

Emphasis of the individual goals within the index should be biased to the digital environment. Water conservation is awesome; but for a data center, humidification or cooling tower make-up water are far more relevant than installing waterless urinals.

The goals within the index have to be easy to identify and calculate. I'm going to borrow from LEED's example here. The simplicity of the LEED scoring is what made it viral.

The index has to "be in touch" with the Data Center environment. In the grand realm of sustainability, one has to weigh the relevance of proximity to mass transit or material recycling to the overall sustainability of a 3 MW lights-out data center.

The goals that make up the index should have different weighting based on relevance to the data center environment. For example, selecting a higher efficiency chiller has more weight than selecting an ultrasonic humidifier.

The index has to be space & size agnostic, as well as construction type agnostic. Often, data center project renovations occur within a mixed use building. Such projects can't qualify for LEED New Construction; the index on the other hand, should be able to quantify a sustainability number to the project.

Along that thought process, I want to introduce a sustainability ranking index that I came up with. The Digital Environment Sustainability Index-or DESI, focuses on six categories with varying weights (Importance) as depicted in the graph above. The index is heavily biased towards Mechanical, IT, and Electrical, and it is right to focus on these energy hogs particularly when in agreement with data from industry publications since 2007.

Similar to LEED scoring, the user is presented with a menu of sustainable goals and credits. Each goal is weighted differently depending on its importance and impact to the digital environment. The sum total of all the goals is 100 and the user picks and chooses the credits that best fit the project and goal. The closer to 100, the more sustainable the site.

I believe the goals and credits that make up the DESI score are achievable over a wide range of renovations and new construction projects and are in line with the thought process of data center operators. This is a Beta Version 1.0 of the DESI score and I am certain that I will be changing my opinion regarding some of the credits; but for now, I intend to start using this Beta version for our existing and potential clients.

Most of the scores are self explanatory, but I will be blogging about specific goals in the future.

So here are the categories and different credits and please let me know if you would like more information as applicable to your project.
The difficult part is the implementation of the sensible cooling loop on the ground. Without going into the thermodynamics of condenser and evaporator head pressures, Comfort Cooling water cooled chillers just aren't built to handle higher leaving evaporator chilled water temperatures (LCHWT).

So this new Trane chiller is essentially a redesign of an industrial comfort cooling chiller to adapt to process cooling type machines.

In this post, I try to reconstruct a situation I saw during a field visit to a friend's colo data center: An Unintentional creation of positive pressure in a hot aisle resulting in the overheating of idle servers. (Image 1) With all good intentions, my friend (the owner) had invested in creating a hot aisle containment system for one of his clients.

Image 2

For one reason or another, (not consulting with an engineer) they improvised by creating a "hot pod" that contained the hot aisle of two rows without a top chimney (connection to a return source to the CRAC units). Image 2. The end result was a hi tech-looking pod that looked like a duck, walked like a duck.... but it didn't quack like a duck.

When my friend described the situation to me, my conclusion was that he somehow managed to positively pressurize the hot aisle; but how? The answers can be shown using CFD simulation. The model was created by my colleague Eric Fournier (an expert in CFD modeling!!) for purposes of this blog only. We exclusively use 6Sigma Room from Future Facilities for all our CFD modeling. We assumed densities across the rows as that information was not shared with me. The largest density 10 kW/rack, the smallest 3 kW/rack.

Complaints were flowing in from the leasing client that the face of the idle servers are too warm (standing in the cold aisle). The facility operator also noticed that they are constantly having to over-cool the cold aisles to compensate for rising temperatures along the front of the idle racks (total waste of energy) and avoid breaching of Service Level Agreements (SLA's). Image 3 shows the same effect.

The concept of containment and releasing heat works when you create a differential pressure. In household chimney or furnace design, you have to create a draft using a long vertical stack with an intake at the low point and vent at the high point. This is a natural vent concept. A pressurized vent is similar but you have to physically connect it to a negative pressure source (return fan). In a contained system, you need that physical connection and a negative pressure source: a duct, return plenum, direct connection to the CRAC unit return fans. All these components are missing in this installation.

Video 1. Pressure Across Isometric View

Video 1 above animates variations in pressure as it slices through the horizontal planes from the ground and up to the high bay ceiling. The first observation is that pressure is all over the place within the contained pod as compared to the adjacent open hot aisles. Most alarming is the positive pressure at the idle servers at the end of the rows, which is the same as Image 1. (pause the video to see various slices). In essence, hot air is pushing right into the back of the idle servers.

In the open hot aisles, pressure is more "even" with higher pressure logically in the center and towards the top of the hot aisle as the air exits the servers and leaves the aisle horizontally and vertically back to the CRAC unit returns; hence minimal re-circulation back into the servers.

Shown below are two video which animate variations in temperature through a section and an isometric view. The CFD shows a plume veering to the left side of the pod perhaps as a result of the location of one the CRAH units. This could be adding to the effect of the inefficiency of the air leaving the top of the pod and putting higher pressure on the idle servers on the left row. If this pod had a chimney, air would be leaving evenly in the center of the hot aisle.

In my opinion, these videos doesn't really show an edge for the contained pod versus the open hot aisles; the hot air plume is just as efficient leaving the hot aisle for the non-contained (slightly better if anything) as it does for the contained. As a reminder, this is modeled by assuming rack densities all over the place. If higher densities are involved (>10 kW) the results would be different.

Lessons learned:

Pressure can play a number on you and you need to understand how to manage it.

Properly designed containment systems work great; it is well worth to involve a qualified person to design one.

Improvising designs is dangerous. A poor design can lead to breaching of Service Level Agreements (SLA's) and often ends up with a client packing up their servers and walking away to a more reliable site.

Powered by Tableau

The opposite of Free cooling is technically "Paid" cooling. The map above shows how much it hurts - in US Dollars/kW - for "Paid Cooling" for various locations in the US using local electric utility rates.

So here's how this effort came about: a couple of weeks ago, I was interested to know how many hours of free cooling can be extracted by data centers based on geographic locations. I had gathered data on zip codes for major concentrations of data centers around the continental US and I ran the Air Side free cooling calculations for each zip code using The Green Grid's free cooling calculator. I used a modest 72 F dry bulb and 52 F dew point as set points (yes .... you can go higher and you should).

I decided to try something new. I subtracted the number of free cooling hours from the total number of hours per year (~8760). This gave me the "Paid" hours of cooling- as one would have to spend energy to operate the mechanical compression systems in order to maintain temperature setpoints.

But there was still something missing. I still wanted to know what the "hurt" factor is for operating a data center in an environment that doesn't make use of free cooling. To be able to answer that, one has to look at the local electric utility rates. Some utilities in northern locations charge more than utilities in the deep south. So while the southern data centers may not benefit from free cooling, they are getting a excellent break in electric utility rates. Therefore the product of paid cooling hours and the local utility rates should give a decent idea of how much it "hurts" to operate the data center in non-desirable geographic locations and non-desirable electric utility rate jurisdictions.

I gathered information on the local electric utility rates for each zip code. For this exercise, I used the Industrial rates in $/kWh as provided in the rate structure of each utility. Those that I could not find, I used the Department of Energy's 2012 rate structure.
Once I had the paid cooling hours and the electric utility rates, I multiplied the two numbers to give me $/kW and I charted the results using Tableau 7.0 software.

Some of the observations that caught my attention:

The least hurt factors occur in the Pacific Northwest and the Rocky Mountain States. Hence it makes sense why major data centers are concentrating in those States.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">California and Florida have approximately the same
hurt factor. “Ouch”! Considering California benefits from so many hours of free
cooling.

Texas ranks a lot better than either California or Florida because their utilities rates are very competitive.

The Mid-Atlantic States suffer from higher rates and "less" free cooling hours.

Virginia benefits from very competitive utility rates and hence evens-out the less number of free cooling hours (compared with northern latitudes).

Some readers asked questions about specific locations, which I thought were very worthy of mentioning. So I'm adding images of a few more locations in New Jersey where rates are cheaper than New York. I'm also adding maps with more detail of the NY/NJ and California areas.
I could go on with observations but in summary, I like the results that I charted. I think it's a unique way to look at data and I plan to fine tune it with more accurate electric utility rates and higher temperature setpoints. I also want to look at locking out humidification and investigate water side cooling in the settings in the Green Grid's free cooling calculator-something I did not have the luxury to modify during this exercise. email if you would like me to share the utility rates separately with you.

Here's a snapshot taken at 8:17 right around the beginning of the half time. it shows traffic 5% above normal mainly in the North East and California regions.

Here's a snap shot taken right towards the end of her show. showing a 4% drop below normal. So in 14 minutes, internet traffic took a 9% slump! I would say many people had their eyes on TV rather than Netflix!
